After you do this many strainer knots, you start to get the hang of them.
Ol' mate at one of the Ag shows, unfortunately a few years after this, showed me how to snap HT wire rather than having to cut it, by twisting it back and doing a half-turn the wrong way - a neat trick, as well as saving a fair bit of time.
We used these tie-offs to strain against, and then joined on with lengths from the other end using a crimping tool.
Just for the record - 3 selvedge lines to support the hingelock on (using fencing staples), plus another two running free above the hingelock, plus 5 to actually anchor the hingelock proper.
