About half the queue to see the first Amorphophalus titanum flowering in Australia.

I have since seen a few of these plants flower at Kew Gardens (#if65e04fb59), and it just doesn't drum up anywhere near the same interest. I think this is weird, given Brits have more of a green thumb reputation than Strines.   While the sign doesn't really yell 'massive promotion', it was a pretty big news item at the time - a slow week, perhaps, but nonetheless a lot of people were getting very excited about this thing flowering.   The big ugly phallus flower in the background. (Other) gawkers in the foreground.   The flower itself - perhaps a day past its prime but still looking pretty good. A young plant of the same species to the left.   The flower as seen from above - no colour adjustment, just the nastiness and washout produced by the flash.   A long exposure on a particularly windy night, looking back at Circular Quay from the steps of the Opera House.  Everyone has a go at taking a picture of the Opera House .. and this is mine.
